Piano no Mori

Read manga

A tranquil tale about two boys from very different upbringings. On one hand you have Kai, born as the son of a prostitute, who`s been playing the abandoned piano in the forest near his home ever since he was young. And on the other you have Syuhei, practically breast-fed by the piano as the son of a family of prestigious pianists. Yet it is their common bond with the piano that eventually intertwines their paths in life.

By Makoto Isshiki (Piano no Mori)

Main Characters

The main character is fifth grader Ichinose Kai
Inchinose who came across the piano in the forest one day by chance. The mysterious instrument was once the cherished possession of school music teacher Ajino Sosuke, who used to be a master pianist but gave up the piano after losing the use of his left hand in a car accident.

Kai has been playing and taking care of the piano since he was young, before becoming aware of his natural musical talent. One interesting aspect of the series is that the piano can only make sounds when Kai plays it.

Amamiya Shuhei
Amamiya transfers into Kai's class. Shuhei has studied the piano since he was very young in order to become a pianist just like his father. He has always been keen to impress those around him with his piano-playing skills, but he is stunned when he hears the bold and soothing musical style of Kai, and eventually comes to be very influenced by him.

Amamiya Shuei is a 5th grade boy whose wish is to become a pianist. At the school he transfers to, he is teased by a bully, Kinpira. He orders Shuei to play a mute piano in the forest near their school. It is his classmate, Ichinose Kai who saves Shuei from the bully. Shuei however, insists that the piano will play and quarrels with Kinpira.

After school is finished, Kai asks Shuei to go to the "Forest of the Piano". There, they find a piano shining beautifully in the light through the leaves. Strangely, Kai can make it sound while Shuei cannot, even though he has been practicing.

Then, Kai announces, "This piano is mine," and dramatically plays the piano barefoot. His tone attracts an audience, and Shuei is greatly moved by Kai's performance. Kai, on the other hand, says he cannot even read music much less play the piano. This surprises Shuei, who has been studying diligently instead of playing with the other children in order to become a pianist like his father. Then, Shuei begins to think of Kai as his rival while Kai begins to love playing the piano. They are going to vie against one another while still being best friends.

A story of friendship and impressive drama over the two boys unfolds on the screen.
